GVCS Tools Status - How to visualize data? (4 scales)
  • Hello Friends,

we try to visualize the completion status of the GVCS Tools according to the Development Template.

On one page we want to show these 4 scales:
    • GVCS tool name
    • development step
    • development step completion
    • which prototype

The current implementation of the visualization is in the Wiki: http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/GVCS_Tools_Status.

Do you have any suggestion on how we can appropriately visualize the status of the tools?

    Greetings,
    Nikolay

  • I have a plan for this -

On http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Global_Village_Construction_Set#The_tools I've made a table listing the tools. The right column represents the development status.

I'd like to put a progress bar in that right hand column, to give a visual representation of the progress. We should make images for each of the steps of the Development Template. These images could be just a vertical progress bar, getting bigger and bigger, or they could be something more artsy, like the first step could be a seed, then the next step could show the seed germinating, then a shoot, then a sapling, until finally we see a tree with fruit.

I can go ahead and make these, but I need one thing clarified: is there a final version of the development template? I see a 32-step plan outlined at http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/GVCS_Tools_Status and http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/GVCS_Development_Template , and a 16-step plan at http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Product_Cycle

It looks like the 16-step version is obsolete, but I'd like to be sure that the 32-step one is finalized before I go ahead and work on visualizations based on it.

    Thanks,
    Conor

  • 32 steps are correct.
Images are good if chosen appropriate to their representation (seeds and trees are too far from the actual meaning) and if placed in an appropriate place in the whole project development. I imagine if we could visualize the process of development in some way. Then put in all images in this visualization the color gray, and when we have fulfilled a step, then we put a colorful image, linked to the corresponding person or topic.
But still didn't have the time to expand this idea.
Another thing to consider - don't use images (needs more work at the beginning), but simple text. The http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/GVCS_Tools_Status is a starting point of this visualization.

  • I made some very simple progress bars - see attachment. They may be too simple. As for being "placed in an appropriate place in the whole project development", they would be displayed in the right-hand column of http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Global_Village_Construction_Set#The_tools and also in the 'development process' page that is generated for each tool by the tool template, for example http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/CEB_Press_Development

  • cool :) and we just add the image in the wiki :) nice!
You could use Inkspace to make vector graphics.

  • Ok, the list on the wiki has changed from 32 steps to 31. What's going on?

  • What would make the Tool Status more clear is if you could see the column headings when you scroll down. Maybe some sort of filter to just show a couple tools or categories. I'm not sure what the wiki is capable of, but you could have lists for the headings and projects and then highlight the ones you would like to see and press "Include" or "Exclude" like in some search applications.
