Bauxite residue -- Potential uses?
  • There is a whole bunch of "red mud" tailings resulting from bauxite refining.  If someone could figure out a use for it, they would create a lot of wealth.  Could bauxite residue be used as a silt/sand filler in compressed earth blocks in locales with clayey soil?  Any other ideas?

  • just had a quick skim read,  'oxidised iron 60% + silica, unleached residual aluminium, and titanium oxide' interesting stuff, the problems with it seem to be limited to it's high  'pH ranging from 10 to 13' and the effort it takes to dry it.

Can't really think of anything that'd use those properties but i'm sure there is something.

  • Definite use in geopolymers, but this is for another thread. Does anyone on this board actually have access to industrial mine tailings sites or have the engineering skill to visualize the machinery and transport equipment for processing such deposits?
