Hello Everyone,

My name is Aaron, and i'm working on resource development to fund the GVCS development. I am working on budget projections for the platform, and I wanted to invite anyone to take a look at the numbers and doublecheck estimates around how long each aspect would take to develop.

Here is a link to the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aj7WbjRT9mlmdGYxZDFDalM3UGNFVTRUME1HalRiMnc&hl=en_US#gid=2

Go to the 'Comprehensive' Sheet at the bottom and you an see all my numbers. The wage info is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics info for average wages for each job.

I would like to ask everyone to focus on how many hours it would take to do each job for each machine. Let me know if you think the numbers need to be adjusted.

Thanks a lot,

Aaron

Moreover, it seems that forums create an environment in which it is easy to talk, but there is little impetus for action.

How do we develop forums that encourage professional contributions?
How do we structure our forum posts such that they encourage action?

To all CAD designers:

It is the purpose of design work to produce clear and easy to understand drawings. In order to accomplish this goal there are several decisions that need to be made and adhered to for all drawings to ensure universal comprehension of the drawings.

Issues to be addressed:
-standard file formats, development of standard design tools (software)
-Standard dimensioning standards such as units and typical number of decimal points.
-training and implementation of GD&T standards
-Standard title block, part naming conventions, and change process.

All CAD designers need to participate in the discussion and the final deliverable will a certification curriculum and process to ensure a common language for design so we can focus our creativity on designing and not on arguing about how to dimension a nut or washer.

Greetings,

Have you ever considered making small Lego-like replicas of the 50
machines? I would totally buy a set for my 8-year-old son. And I suspect I'm not
alone.

I wonder if you 1) figured out the cost of production, 2) marked it up
10X or so to ensure a sufficient return, and 3) posted on Kickstarter to
say you'd produce the mini-machines after getting, say, 500
subscribers, if that would result in significant fund-raising mojo?
There's no way Boing Boing would fail to post about this.

Maybe do a limited, numbered first edition and sell the sets for $1000 each. TED participants might be interested, among others.

Or start selling the replicas one at a time, and have people subscribe to the "GVCS Collectors' Club".

You could give the machines names (like "Andy the Aluminum Extractor"), sell kids' books with pictures showing how the machines interact and how they work, and sell videos like the "Mighty Machines" series: http://www.ncircleentertainment.com/content.aspx?id=NCmightyMachines .

I've begun to meet with farmers and land owners within a 3 hour radius of New York City to discuss creating OSE-certified workshops on their land so they can begin building, modifying, improving and documenting OSE tools. I've secured a spot on my friend's 200 acre 'tree farm' in Greentown, PA, but the land is virgin so there is much to build before we can start making OSE tools. I've spoken to a number of organic farmers and investors in the area and people are very interested in putting together 'nodes in the OSE network' but there's an obvious lack of people who could run such a facility.

Are other people actively approaching land owners, farmers and investors about supporting Factor e Farm and putting OSE workshops together in their own communities? If so, I'd like to begin a conversation, share best practices, collaborate on marketing materials, and document everything in the OSE wiki. Also, let me know if you live in the NYC area. We've got land in PA, office space in NYC and a half dozen people who want to build OSE tools and spread the message of abundance through free/libre/opensource development and deployment.

Hello Everyone

I believe the organizational structure of the organization is in serious need of improvement, and since I'm stuck in an airport all day today I am going to be fielding a series of proposals to try to strengthen the OSE team.

At this time it seems as though there are, at most, two hundred highly specialized people who can make a part time commitment and a handful who can make a greater commitment.

Our current system is to divide people into dedicated roles within specific projects, but that is inappropriate for an organization as small and scattered as ours.

My proposal is to adopt a "pool" approach, where you have a CAD pool, a Fabrication pool, a marketing pool, and so forth. Each project will have a dedicated project manager and the pm will send work requests to the various pools. Within the pool the group of peers will be able to allocate those tasks based on schedule constraints and skill levels. In this way junior members of the pool will be able to contribute without being overwhelmed and the senior members can help multiple projects so they don't get stuck waiting when their project moves into a phase where they aren't needed.

In order to remain in alignment with the goal of preventing over specialization this dynamic process will enable cross-training and prevent the formation of isolated project cliques.

This would also allow us to develop a handful of fabrication/testing locations easily accessible to the majority of fabrication pool members.

If necessary, I volunteer to coordinate this process.
